What is my role exactly? Candidate asked…

This is a frequent question asked by a candidate after the recruiter has explained the job role…strange isn’t it? Many times the recruiter describes a job role (based on what is written in the JD), but yet they are not clearly articulating the role that the candidate understands or wants to hear.

So how can one present a job role that is clearly understood by the candidate and thus create the required impact? Yes, the impact is only achieved when the candidate identifies with the role in their subconscious minds; building a visual of them performing the role.

Here are 4 key essentials of describing a job opportunity that will make the candidates imagine themselves already in the role:

1. The job title – simple yet this is never clearly mentioned. Ideally, the title should seem an increment from the current title of the candidate e.g if the candidate is a software developer, state the title as Sr.Software developer.
2. Core responsibility – using words like ‘to accomplish…’ add sense of purpose and empowerment….e.g “your responsibility will be to accomplish 4-5 new software features on the application”.
3. Skills required by the role – Here state that the role requires certain skills…rather than questioning the candidate whether they have these skills e.g “the role requires you to have strong java back-end development skills along with Hibernate framework understanding”.
4. Reporting to and team size – state the title of the reporting manager e.g “you will directly report to the Project Head and you will be part of 20 member project team”.
5. Location & office timings – State the street level location details and office timings e.g “you will work out of our High Street, Mumbai office and your office timings will be 10:00 am to 7:00 pm, 6 days a week”.

While the above is most basic and many recruiters would be doing bits and pieces of it, the true power is in doing it consistently over and over again.
