effective candidate screening

A productive company is a successful company, and nothing slows down productivity like an employee that doesn’t fit in. Be it because of personality, experience or even familiarity with the position, an employee that is not prepared (or unwilling) to do their job can seriously hurt your bottom line (in extreme cases, they may even be a danger to your workplace). In light of this, many companies choose to screen their candidates before making the decision to hire. This is an excellent way to avoid a poor hiring choice, and almost always leads to finding the perfect fit for a job. Consider the following things that screening an employee helps you avoid:

You avoid hiring an unqualified worker

Nearly 43% of people lie on their resumes, although most of the time it’s related to salary information. While this isn’t too big a deal (at worst, your company will end up paying an employee a bit more), a candidate that lies on their resume could do serious harm to your company, especially if they lie about their experience or skills. After all, most jobs aren’t easy enough to “pick up on the fly,” so an omission in a resume could lead to hiring an employee that will not be able to perform their job. If your business employees people that need licenses or credentials to perform job functions, hiring a candidate without those credentials could cost you thousands in fines.

You avoid hiring a dangerous individual

With workplace violence on the rise, most managers want to avoid hiring someone with a predisposition to violent behaviour. Background checks can reveal any recent violent criminal charges and talking to a candidate’s former employer will let you know if you are hiring a “bully” that may physically or mentally harm your employees.

You avoid hiring someone that may be tempted to steal from you

While you shouldn’t base all of your decisions on it, you may want to run a credit check on an applicant that will be working with sensitive data (like HR documents containing other employee’s social security numbers and addresses) or expensive, easily stolen equipment (such as laptop computers or other technical equipment). Someone that is in massive amounts of debt and has many recent defaults may be tempted to steal in order to pay off their debt.
