DON’T tell me something about yourself!
Gosh, even today recruiters end up asking this pre-historic opening question to start their phone interview–“Tell me something about yourself”! Reason this is no longer a relevant question is that in most cases, the candidate rattles off same things that he/she has already mentioned in their CVs. Further, I wonder what is the Recruiter expecting to hear other than that is mentioned on the CV?
Ironically, the Recruiter starts making faces, when the poor candidate, not knowing what to answer, starts mentioning “I was born in a remote village of Jhumritallaya; my Father works in the Public Works Department as Engineer; my Mother is housewife…..”, when the Recruiter starts sensing that the candidate may move next to talk about his/her brothers & sisters…that’s when they change the topic hurriedly!
So what should the Recruiters be asking now? There is so much information about the candidate already available on their CVs and Social profiles. Even if the candidate has glorified themselves on the CV and Social media, what can we ask that reveals their true self (and see through the fakeness)?
