In an ever-changing and fast-evolving business world, even the most experienced recruiters can make mistakes. However, a hiring mistake can cost dearly to the company. It would be advisable for recruiters not to be complacent and fall back on their experience every time, as it is not always helpful.

Here’s a list of key mistakes that every recruiter makes, but should avoid –

1. Selling the job the same way:

A recruiter is a marketer, selling the organization. As per routine, you may end up rattling off the same pitch every day, which loses its edge. It’s time to attract candidates through innovative pitches. Introduce newness by describing the job in an interesting manner, handing candidates a “day in the life”case-study or showing them a realistic job preview video.

2. ‘Skimming’ through CVs without attention to details:

In the race against time, it is easier to superficially skim through CVs. However, it’s a recipe for disaster as you may miss out on the more important details such as behavioural patterns and absence of references. Do review the profile and personality from various data sources like social media accounts, databases, etc. to ensure the best hire.

3. A lacklustre ‘candidate experience’:

Bad experiences stay afresh for a long time. So ignore a candidate’s experience at your own peril. Be it basics like travel/accommodation, the timeliness of interview, or feedbacks and updates post-interaction, add the ‘human’ element to the experience. Candidates, especially rejects are keen to know the feedback, be sure to provide that and build long-lasting relationships. Who knows, the next person he or she refers may turn out to be your ideal candidate!

4. Not negotiating enough:

You like the candidate and are set to discuss money! Do not rattle off the numbers as you would find in a financial statement! Study and compare the prior and offered compensation component by component, spell out tax implications and decide on the feasible range beforehand. Negotiate by doling out ‘benefits’ wherever you can to minimize fixed cost to the company. As a recruiter, develop your negotiation skills – convince on your point while being ‘fair’ to the candidate.

5. Not updating yourself on trends:

With time, due to nature of work you may become complacent and just administer routines. Break free – read up on the industry trends, and get updated on the latest tools and techniques! Update your know-how and continuously improvise!
